Createasphere's Post Production Master Class Has New York Debut
Written by Christine Purse
Ed Lachman, ASC & colorist Sam Daley shared collaboration on Mildred Pierce.
Gathering some of the most insightful experts leading the post production industry in New York together with a group of working post pros, Createasphere’s Post Production Master Class unveiled a lively and informative two day run in Manhattan last week.
Post-production is making rapid, sometimes radical shifts from recent working models, changing year-to-year and often from project to project. The customized workflow is becoming commonplace, unheard of in the days of film based finishing. That makes digging into top-level information increasingly important for those at work in production, post production, and visual effects. The panels’ thought leaders shared real world experiences and future thoughts about the state of the industry and how to adapt to the environment of change. The changes are going to continue, and while there is some difference of opinion on workflows and outcomes, there is consistency in the notion that change in these technologies and workflows will be fast and ongoing.
Ed Lachman, ASC, Oscar-nominated cinematographer and recent Emmy-nominee for Mildred Pierce, joined his colorist Sam Daley (Technicolor) in project-based discussions focused on how the tools of the DI help storytellers realize their vision. Award winning editor Jeff Wolf, ACE gave the attendees an inside the cutting room view of how technology supports, but does not execute or substitute for the storytelling process.
From the movement away from film based acquisition and a growing number of cameras, to multiple delivery formats, and the changing consumption patterns of the audience, the experts and attendees took a hard look at how careers and companies are responding to the demands of the creative and technical communities they serve.
Other speakers included Jeff Roth (Focus Features), Terry Brown (MegaPlayground), Dylan Carter (Deluxe/Company 3), David Feldman (Deluxe/Company 3), Mike Jackman (PNYA and Deluxe), Joe Beirne (PostWorks), Jason Young (JSY Productions), Andrew Stubbs Johnston (Superfad), Jim Geduldick, Matthew Mallinson (ALL Creative NY), Sam Daley (Technicolor), Marc Hamaker (Autodesk), Glenn Allen (Brainstorm Digital), Michael Suissa (The Studio-B&H).
The event was sponsored by Active Storage, Autodesk, Quantum, with supporting sponsors American Cinema Editors, American Society of Cinematographers, Post NY Alliance, and POST Magazine.
An intimate gathering that put the experts in close conversation with attendees, the Post Production Master Class heads next to Burbank in November.
