Second Keynote Announced for Entertainment Technology Expo
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo DP joins immersive visionary for exciting lineup.
Next month’s Entertainment Technology Expo will feature two impressive keynote speakers, the latest to be announced being Jeff Cronenweth, ASC.
Cronenweth is the cinematographer for David Fincher’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. His stimulating visual style on the film is nominated for an Academy Award, as well as an American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Award and a BAFTA. The Academy nomination is Cronenweth’s second, following last year’s The Social Network nod.
Cronenweth’s career launched at the dawn of music videos, gaining far-reaching acclaim for his work on groundbreaking videos for artists as diverse as U2, Michael Jackson, Nine Inch Nails, No Doubt, Celine Dion, Moby and Macy Gray. He has won MTV, CLIO and MVPA cinematography awards. Cronenweth is known for utilizing dim-lit, close-up, long-shot filming of scenes, as exemplified in Fight Club as well as many of the music videos and commercials he has worked on. “Whether we were inside or outside, we always wanted to keep a shallow depth of field to keep the audience focused on what we wanted them to see,” says Cronenweth of his Fight Club technique.
Also at the Expo, Ed Lantz, founder of Vortex Immersion Media, will share his vision during a unique keynote entitled “Dive Into Immersive Entertainment and the Transmedia Hub” which takes place in the Vortex Dome. Lantz will introduce a number of immersive projects and conversations with content creators and experience-makers that combine live action, VFX, 3D, digital asset management and more.
“We are all looking forward to hearing what Ed Lantz has to say about the future of entertainment and content creation,” notes Kristin Petrovich Kennedy, President of Createasphere. His work is inspiring and thought provoking. Needless to say, we are very happy to be able to present these keynotes in the Vortex Dome, one of the most compelling venues in the city! The day is shaping up to be an incredibly valuable one for our attendees, and a rare opportunity to mingle with thought leaders.”
Createasphere’s Spring Entertainment Technology Expo takes place March 1, 2012 at Los Angeles Center Studios in downtown L.A. Admission is free, but advance registration is required to attend either keynote session. For more info, and to register, visit: www.createasphere.com/ete.
Golden Reel Nominations
Motion Picture Sound Editors honor audio artists.
Nominees for the 59th Annual Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards have been announced and a gala evening is planned to celebrate the role of sound in storytelling.
"The significance of sound should not be underestimated," offers MPSE president Bobbi Banks. "The emotional intimacy of the sound experience is amplified by giving the audience the perception that they are encountering the same state of cognitive consciousness as the characters."
Winners in various categories of Feature Films, Television and Others will be given their 2012 Golden Reels at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel on Sunday, February 19. Leading proponents of the art of sound editing, music editing and sound design from around the world will be on hand to laud their peers.
“Our members are editing professionals who want to raise awareness of what a motion-picture soundtrack is capable of doing to support the art of motion pictures,” considers Ms. Banks.
In addition, the 2012 MPSE Filmmaker Award will be film/TV producer Gale Anne Hurd (Terminator, The Walking Dead), while the 2012 MPSE Career Achievement Recipient will be renowned sound designer and editor George Watters II (Pirates of the Caribbean, National Treasure, Armageddon).

Capturing the Action in Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol
Robert Elswit, ASC and Director Brad Bird build "wow" moments.
The Kremlin is rocked by an explosion, and the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) is supposedly to blame. Team leader Ethan Hunt and his crew turn rogue and must trot the globe to clear the IMF name in Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol, the fourth installment in the M:I franchise. Tom Cruise reprises his role as Hunt, with a supporting cast featuring Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton and Tom Wilkinson. J.J. Abrams again produces through Bad Robot for distribution through Paramount Pictures.
Handling the visual aesthetics is Academy Award-winning cinematographer Robert Elswit, ASC—whose credits read as a very long list of very fine work (including Oscar-winning There Will Be Blood; Oscar-nominated Good Night, and Good Luck; The Town; Syriana; Magnolia). Handling the directing duties is Brad Bird, whose prior, highly successful directorial efforts involved characters of the animated kind (Ratatouille, The Incredibles, The Iron Giant). M:I-Ghost Protocol marks Bird’s live-action debut.
