Entertainment Technology Expo Recap
Written by Laura Pursley
New York event brings knowledge, networking, and technology together.
Createasphere’s Entertainment Technology Expo just finished two exciting days in New York City with several new technologies making their U.S. premieres at the show.
“We were proud to help our clients such as JVC and Sony debut new cameras fresh after IBC,” said Kristin Petrovich Kennedy, President of Createasphere. “We also facilitated a special presentation of Litepanels’ newest LED products to the ASC.”
The Litepanels presentation was made during a networking breakfast including Members and Friends of the American Society of Cinematographers. Pat Groswendt, Founder of Litepanels, introduced the new Sola 4 and the Hilio High Output Light, both of which will be fully available by end of the year. In addition to the ASC presentation, Groswendt said the Expo offered “a very intimate design, making end-users feel welcome by all the exhibitors”.
A very different product debut occurred the night before at the Expo session “State of the NLE”. This post-production networking event was organized by a “Super Summit” of regional user groups including All Creative NY, ProductionCONN, NJ FCP User Group, and MoPICTIVE. With the release of Final Cut Pro 10.0.1 earlier that day, the presenters invited noted FCP guru Evan Schechtman to kick the tires of Apple’s update in front of a full audience of FCP, Premiere, and Media Composer users.
Expo attendees enjoyed additional educational sessions such as AJA’s “File-Based Workflow” and the “Shooting the Breeze” panel featuring ASC Members Sandi Sissel, Richard Crudo, and Bob Primes. Independent filmmaker Cynthia Granville noted it was the combination of sessions, informative exhibits, and the Canon Professional Services free Clean & Check offer that made her day at the Expo. “It was so convenient to drop off my Canon camera for cleaning and then see similar equipment in use for a stripped down broadcast production,” said Granville referring to Joe Pontecorvo’s session on using the Canon 5D Mark 2 for shooting the PBS Nature documentary Bears of the Last Frontier.
