A Spotlight Event: The American Cinematographer Legendary Conversation with Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC
Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC, joins American Cinematographer Associate Editor Jon Witmer in a rare and inspiring conversation. Deakins is a nine time Oscar nominee for Best Cinematography and the recipient of the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Cinematographers. His Academy Award nominations include True Grit, No Country for Old Men, The Shawshank Redemption, Kundun, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Reader (shared credit with Chris Menges), Fargo, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and The Man Who Wasn’t There. He has been nominated 10 times for the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Award and won the award twice for Shawshank Redemption and The Man who Wasn’t There. Deakins has enjoyed a twenty year collaboration with The Coen Brothers and has worked with many of the leading directors of our day on titles including Revolutionary Road, Doubt, A Beautiful Mind, The House of Sand and Fog, Homicide, Sid & Nancy, and many more. Deakins also was a visual consultant for the beloved animated features WALL•E and How To Train Your Dragon.

Jon Witmer, Associate Editor, American Cinematographer Magazine
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Jon D. Witmer majored in film studies at The Ohio State University before traveling west to try his fortunes in Los Angeles’ film industry. After working as a camera assistant on feature films, television series, music videos and commercials and shooting numerous short films, Jon joined the staff of American Cinematographer Magazine, where he currently serves as associate editor.
ROGER DEAKINS, ASC, BSC
Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC was born in Torquay, Devon, England. He attended art college and the National Film School. He began in still photography and many of his stills can be seen on his website (www.rogerdeakins.com). He then turned documentaries, shooting many in Africa as well as covering the Whitbread Round the World Yacht race that required him to work for more than 9 months as a crew member while filming a documentary.
Roger then went on to feature cinematography, starting in England and then later shooting in the United States.
Roger Deakins has been nominated nine times for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. Cited for his work on Joel and Ethan Coen’s True Grit, No Country for Old Men; Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption; Martin Scorsese’s Kundun; Andrew Dominik’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford; Stephen Daldry’s The Reader (shared credit with Chris Menges); and Joel Coen’s Fargo, The Man Who Wasn’t There, and O Brother, Where Art Thou?
He has been nominated 10 times for the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Award and won the award twice for Shawshank Redemption and The Man who Wasn’t There. Cited was his work on the eight features listed above, as well as on Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road.
He will be receiving the ASC’s Lifetime Achievement award in 2011.
He has been nominated 6 times and twice won the BAFTA award for cinematography for The Man who Wasn’t There and No Country for Old Men.
He has been nominated 5 times and four times won the BSC award.
He was honored in 2008 with the NBR’s Career achievement in Cinematography award.
He has been nominated twice and won once for the Independent Spirit awards.
Recently, Roger has been the visual consultant for several animated features - Pixar’s release WALL•E and Dreamworks' How to Train Your Dragon as well as several other projects currently in production.

Steve Gaub, Producer
Steve Gaub served as both Co-Producer and VFX Producer on TRON: LEGACY. In addition to overseeing the production of almost 1,600 VFX shots for the show, he also drafted the production’s workflows for their 3D all-digital capture and post, and for their in-house “lab,” which processed over 400TB of data. Prior to TRON: LEGACY, Steve served as an Associate Producer on various feature films, including most recently TERMINATOR SALVATION. As Associate Producer, he has overseen Post Production, VFX Production and Digital Intermediate for features with a wide array of unique technical innovations and challenges. Prior to his work as an Associate Producer, Steve put in time in the Features Physical Production divisions at INTERMEDIA FILMS and OUTLAW FILMS. Steve got his start in the business in physical production in the always challenging world of low-budget independent features. Currently, Gaub is at work with TRON: LEGACY director Joseph Kosinski on OBLIVION.
Vince Pace , CEO, Cinematographer & Innovator, PACEAs an acclaimed cinematographer and co-inventor of the world's most advanced stereoscopic 3D system known as FUSION, Vince Pace is leading the effort to reinvent the entertainment experience.
Vince Pace has been instrumental in capturing some of the world's most captivating productions of our time.
