The workshop consists of two parts:

  • Exploring light and color theory and how it pertains to how we perceive and reproduce color, the choices that filmmakers can make to create a color palette through set design, costuming, lighting, in-camera choices, on set color management and post production.
  • A hands-on course in Apple’s Color software, guiding students through the various tools and choices that are available to re-shape and and mold the final image and create distinctive “looks”. Attendees have the option of becoming Apple certified by taking a certification exam after the course is completed.

Instructors:

Andrew Balis, director or photography, editor, colorist and Moviola’s principal instructor, will lead attendees through a deeper understanding of the nature of color, how it’s reproduced and perceived. Explore how choices made at different stages affect the final look, examine different looks employed by other filmmakers and lighting techniques for achieving specific results, exploring the different crop of current digital formats and how they affect color reproduction. Andrew will also lead attendees through a hands-on thorough exploration of Apple’s Color software.

Nick Theodorakis, a renowned Digital Imaging Technician (DIT) working on the latest A-list Hollywood films, will provide insight to color management on set, “painting” the look on set, and how to create consistency in the viewing of the image from set through post.
