Examining On-Set Post: What is the impact on schedules, budgets—and creativity?

alembicWhen shooting the upcoming “True Grit” on location in Texas and New Mexico, Roger Deakins, ASC didn’t have access to a post production suite or theater in order to view dailies of his 35mm lensed film. But thanks to the portability of today’s post equipment, he was able to view his dailies on-set in a proper calibrated screening environment, in this instance using EFILM’s Eview on-set service.

In recent years it has become common to go on-set with tools and tasks that were once relegated to post production facilities. But the advancement of on-set capabilities such as color timing, quality control, and creation of deliverables for editorial, has reached a breakneck pace. Some say it can make filmmaking better, faster and/or cheaper, though filmmakers will debate these points. Read the full story

Interview with Dave Frederick, SOC

Dave FredrickDavid Frederick, SOC, will be heading up an SOC sponsored panel on November 4, 2010 at the Createasphere Entertainment Technology Expo at the Burbank Marriott. The respected operator, DP and Steadicam operator’s lengthy list of credits include projects as diverse as Driving Miss Daisy, Sons of Anarchy, The Soloist and Dance Flick. David is a member of the Society of Operating Cameramen and was President of the Society from 2005 through 2007. He is an active participant in his professional community, serving as an Executive Committee Member for the Cinematography Peer Group of National Television Arts & Sciences; as a National Awards Committee member for the National Television Arts & Sciences; and is a member of the Steadicam Operators Guild. He produced the SOC Lifetime Achievement Awards from 2007-2009. Dave attended Hofstra University, and is a graduate of the prestigious Tisch School of The Arts at NYU. New York Wrap Up
Createasphere's Entertainment Technology Expo returned to NYC for its third year with a lively turnout for a broad spectrum of new products and product premiers at the New Yorker Hotel on September 21 and 22. Running alongide the busy expo, educational opportunities, and meet ups, were panels featuring luminaries and experts focused on Real World 3D and an enlightenting Conversation with Tom Houghton, ASC with American Cinematographer writer Iain Stasukevich.

On September 23 and 24, Createasphere's Digital Asset Management Conference made its New York debut with a veritable Who's who of digital asset management including Elizabeth Scott & Tab Butler from Major League Baseball, Henrik de Gyor, (K12) John Dougherty (Hachette Filipacchi) Christopher Grakai (Turner Broadcast,) Alex Grossman (Active Storge,) Sam Bogoch (Avid) and many more. The Digital Asset Management Conference culminated with The DAMMY Awards, recognizing groundbreaking efforts in digital asset management over the past year. MediaBeacon's Jason Bright took home the DAMMY of the Year at a gala luncheon on September 24.
