Star Trek
The one Trekkies have been waiting for since, well, the beginning. Cinematographer Dan Mindel (Mission Impossible III, Domino, The Skeleton Key) teams up with director/producer extraordinaire J.J. Abrams (Cloverfield, Alias, Lost, Fringe) to visualize Kirk, Spock, Bones and the gang's early years when the Enterprise was still just a rendering on some geek's lightpad. Chock-a-block with outrageous visual effects, and spanning most of space and time, the first new Star Trek feature in nearly eight years stars a host of exciting newcomers, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg.

Drag Me To Hell
If there's any single filmmaker who has used visual effects to define his career, it's Sam Raimi. From Evil Dead, made in 1981, on through Army of Darkness and each entry in the visually stupefying Spider-Man franchise, Raimi has continually upped what is possible in the fantasy world. Working with cinematographer Peter Deming, ASC, for Drag Me To Hell, Raimi returns to his first true passion, supernatural horror, to spin a terrifying tale of hell on earth.

True Blood
HBO has hardly taken a misstep with their original series programming, and their newest entry, True Blood, shot by Matthew Jensen and Romeo Tirone (Pilot by Checco Varese) should do for vampires what Six Feet Under did for morticians! Created by Alan Ball, who also wrote the Oscar winning feature American Beauty. True Blood follows a prescient Louisiana barmaid (Anna Paquin) and her adventures with a pack of vampires who are so down-to-earth, their only conceit to the supernatural is a pair of XXL chompers, aka fangs.

Departments & Specials

Our May HD Gear Guide fairly pixellates with exciting and diverse new digital products, everything from the little HD camera that roamed the streets of Mumbai to help win this year's Oscar, the P+S Technik SI-2K, to a digital transfer station from Panavision, explained by Andy Romanoff and Shelly Johnson.
